Why I Dance Nia for Self and Community

I am reminded of why I dance Nia as there have been a lot of changes in the world and many are struggling with the darkness within humanity. Those who desire for people to see the light have found their world view rocked. Shocked, grieving, and burdened are just many of the emotions I have been sensing in myself, my students, community and country. How do we continue to move forward and bring a sense of love rather than fear into our lives and others? Each one of us needs to answer that for ourselves. All I know is that when I’m struggling with this question, I teach a Nia class and the burden and fear starts to lift so I can send out love and healing energy to all those around me.

Over the years, I am reminded of why I keep getting on the dance floor and teaching Nia. Most importantly, I know when I don’t feel like getting out of bed, when I’m exhausted, when the anxiety is high or the depression is starting to set in, when I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders, when I feel overwhelmed and can’t think I can do any more, and when I don’t feel like teaching that it critical for me to get up, dance and teach Nia. All signs that I need movement and a place to express and release the tension. A place to feel safe and to heal. A place to reclaim peace and joy. A place to leave the difficult cultural challenges behind. A place to grieve for the loss of a loved one. A place to feel connected and loved. A place to honor and celebrate who I am. A place to move and feel connected with my body.
