The Power Of Exercise
What is the number one thing you can do to help manage stress and improve your overall health and well-being?
I recently attended a functional medicine conference, and time and time again the research supported that exercise is one of the most beneficial things for your health and well-being. Exercise can be as effective as an antidepressant medication. Exercise can prevent and help manage chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Exercise can extend life. Research has shown that the more someone exercises the longer they lived.
Making Exercise Part Of Our Routine
So if we know exercise is important to our health how do we make it part of our normal routine? How do we commit? Sometimes you can start small.
I recently heard about a book by Steven Guise, it’s titled “Mini habits: smaller habits, bigger results”. I love this concept because it’s giving us the opportunity to start small and not feel completely overwhelmed.
One person who read the book would do push-ups every time he went to the bathroom. He started off with four, so each time after going to the bathroom he would do push-ups and then go on with his day. He increased the number of push-ups he did every time, thus turning a small habit into a big result.
If you are wanting to make these changes in your life, how can you maybe start small? Can you start by turning on some music and dancing for a couple minutes, or maybe as many as five minutes? Can you maybe just go for a little walk?
You can start with just a few minutes each day. Connecting it into something that is already a part of a routine can be a good way to start bringing in that new habit.
Sometimes you just have to carve out the time. I’m a person who is more likely to exercise if I carve out the time, if I commit to going to a class. Part of finding success is in looking at what your routine looks like, and finding places where can you make small changes.
For me, sometimes it means I get up early while everyone is still sleeping so I can go for a swim. Sometimes it means that I start my workday an hour later so I make sure I get that in.
Life is stressful, we often feel pulled in many directions, especially with it being the holiday season right now. So how do we manage it all? I have got to tell you, exercise is the only thing that’s keeping me sane. I know that it’s taking some time out of when I can be ticking something off my list but I know that I’m actually more productive and happier and calmer if I exercise. If I take that time to listen to what it is that my body needs, I am, in the long run, more successful.
So I encourage you to find ways to carve out the time to begin to make small changes in your life. I’d love to see you in a class if you need that community and social support.

Find something that feeds your soul because you are much more likely to stick with it. If your exercise feels dull, if it feels like work, you might need to make a different choice. You can get your heart rate up and play and have fun.
